    Turbulence transition and the edge of chaos in pipe flow

    The linear stability of pipe flow implies that only perturbations of sufficient strength will trigger the transition to turbulence. In order to determine this threshold in perturbation amplitude we study the \emph{edge of chaos} which separates perturbations that decay towards the laminar profile and perturbations that trigger turbulence. Using the lifetime as an indicator and methods developed in (Skufca et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 174101 (2006)) we show that superimposed on an overall 1/â„ś1/\Re-scaling predicted and studied previously there are small, non-monotonic variations reflecting folds in the edge of chaos. By tracing the motion in the edge we find that it is formed by the stable manifold of a unique flow field that is dominated by a pair of downstream vortices, asymmetrically placed towards the wall. The flow field that generates the edge of chaos shows intrinsic chaotic dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation of travelling wave solutions in pipe flow

    The appearance of travelling-wave-type solutions in pipe Poiseuille flow that are disconnected from the basic parabolic profile is numerically studied in detail. We focus on solutions in the 2-fold azimuthally-periodic subspace because of their special stability properties, but relate our findings to other solutions as well. Using time-stepping, an adapted Krylov-Newton method and Arnoldi iteration for the computation and stability analysis of relative equilibria, and a robust pseudo-arclength continuation scheme we unfold a double-zero (Takens-Bogdanov) bifurcating scenario as a function of Reynolds number (Re) and wavenumber (k). This scenario is extended, by the inclusion of higher order terms in the normal form, to account for the appearance of supercritical modulated waves emanating from the upper branch of solutions at a degenerate Hopf bifurcation. These waves are expected to disappear in saddle-loop bifurcations upon collision with lower-branch solutions, thereby leaving stable upper-branch solutions whose subsequent secondary bifurcations could contribute to the formation of the phase space structures that are required for turbulent dynamics at higher Re.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures (pdf and png).     Shear-flow transition: the basin boundary

    The structure of the basin of attraction of a stable equilibrium point is investigated for a dynamical system (W97) often used to model transition to turbulence in shear flows. The basin boundary contains not only an equilibrium point Xlb but also a periodic orbit P, and it is the latter that mediates the transition. Orbits starting near Xlb relaminarize. We offer evidence that this is due to the extreme narrowness of the region complementary to basin of attraction in that part of phase space near Xlb. This leads to a proposal for interpreting the 'edge of chaos' in terms of more familiar invariant sets.Comment: 11 pages; submitted for publication in Nonlinearit

    Semiclassical cross section correlations

    We calculate within a semiclassical approximation the autocorrelation function of cross sections. The starting point is the semiclassical expression for the diagonal matrix elements of an operator. For general operators with a smooth classical limit the autocorrelation function of such matrix elements has two contributions with relative weights determined by classical dynamics. We show how the random matrix result can be obtained if the operator approaches a projector onto a single initial state.     Impact of In-Service Professional Development Programs for Early Childhood Teachers on Quality Ratings and Child Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis

    High pedagogical quality in early childhood education and care (ECEC) is related to developmental outcomes in young children. This review summarizes findings from (quasi)-experimental studies that evaluated in-service training effects for ECEC professionals on external quality ratings and child development. The aggregation of findings at teacher level (including 36 studies with 2,891 teachers) revealed a medium in-service training effect on process quality (effect size [ES] = 0.68, SE = 0.07, p < .001). Furthermore, a subset of nine studies (including 486 teachers and 4,504 children) that provided data on both quality ratings and child development were analyzed, and they showed a small effect at child level (ES = 0.14; SE = 0.02, p < .001) and a medium effect at the corresponding classroom level (ES = 0.45, SE = 0.11, p < .001). Variance in effect sizes at child level was significantly related to in-service effects on quality ratings (53% explained variance). The results show that quality improvement is a key mechanism to accelerate the development of young children
